Winter Skincare: 7 Habits that Actually Work

Winter does not have to mean dry, tight, flaky skin. With a few small swaps, your skin can stay balanced and hydrated all season.

Swap foaming cleansers for cream or balm cleansers. Foam strips the lipid barrier - exactly the opposite of what dry winter air is already doing.

Layer hydrating serum under moisturiser, not the other way around. Humectants draw water in, and occlusives on top seal it.

Avoid hot showers longer than 8 minutes. Hot water melts the skin barrier. Warm is better than hot.

Use a lip balm with shea butter every night, especially before bed. Chapped lips take weeks to heal if you ignore them.

Sunscreen does not stop being important in winter - UV rays still penetrate clouds. SPF 30 on exposed skin every day.

Finally: invest in a humidifier for the bedroom if you can. Eight hours of moisturised air while you sleep does more than any night cream.
